Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough

3 Stars Source: Library

(POSSIBLE SPOILERS AHEAD)

Brief Synopsis: Louise is a typical single mom in her late twenties. On a random night out, she makes a great connection with a man, David, but doesn't expect to run into him again. She quickly finds out, however, that he is her new boss. To make it more awkward, he's married and she somehow finds herself becoming good friends with his wife, Adele. According to David's side of the story, Adele is troubled and his marriage is over. Adele's version paints David in a much different light. So who is Louise to believe? Something strange is afoot, but Louise really has no idea how insane it's about to become.

Thoughts: I'm not typically drawn to psychological thrillers, especially those stories where people are purposely being deceived for dubious motives (usually to ruin someone's life). But I found watching this addictive series on Netflix really motivated me to use my treadmill so I binged it all over a week and, well, it was pretty fun. I then decided I needed to read it (I know, I did it backwards this time but whatever, there are no rules here folks!), mainly to see if the book had the same twist as the show and it did.

IF YOU DON'T WANT SPOILERS, STOP READING NOW.

Here's the thing: I picked up on where the story was going about 3/4 through, only because of one of my favorite childhood authors already prepared me on such matters. Who else loved Lois Duncan? She wrote such YA classics as I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Third Eye, Daughters of Eve, and Killing Mr. Griffin. If you happened to read Stranger With My Face, like I did in the 5th grade and it totally freaked me out, then you may already know where I'm going. I realize this is the weird, supernatural-loving, part of me, but authors like Duncan (and Stephen King mostly) helped me be "prepared" for any acts of evil aggression that might come my way. Namely, the first thing you should know if you're preparing to astral project out of your body, you absolutely have to have someone you trust guard your shell so that bad guys can't sneak in and pretend to be you--duh!!! That's why I knew what Adele was up to and poor, naive Louise just went along for the ride. If only she had read Duncan's books, she would have been better prepared; alas, it didn't turn out well for sweet Louise.
