Brief Synopsis: Set in 1920's North Carolina, this is a story with 3 narrators--Gertrude, a poverty-stricken mother of 4 trying to flee an abusive husband; Annie, a wealthy matriarch with family secrets; and Retta, the African-American housekeeper to Annie who is learning to live in a post-slavery world.
Thoughts: I initially had no interest in this book as these types of stories don't usually appeal to me. It was my Postal Book Club's pick, however, so I decided to give it a try and was pleasantly surprised. This is one of those books where I would just plan to read a few pages but ended up reading late into the night because the story-telling was just that good. I might have rated a bit higher if the ending hadn't fallen into some tropes that I felt were not needed and, frankly, made me a little uncomfortable--there is a fine line between artistic license and white people writing about characters of color in a way that just feels...stereotypical and trite.
