Notes On A Silencing by Lacy Crawford

4 Stars Source: Libby

Brief Synopsis: Lacy Crawford suffered a brutal sexual assault while attending a prestigious boarding school back in the 90's. While that part of her story is tragic, the real horror of the story lies in the subsequent treatment she received while still a teenager, as well as the lengths the school went to in order to cover up her report.

Thoughts: There is no doubt going into this book that it's going to be a difficult read, in terms of subject matter. However, these stories need to be shared so that we may be a witness to these experiences. Crawford's account of the cruel treatment she endured following a sexual assault at a prestigious boarding school is both heart-wrenching and infuriating, although (unfortunately) not surprising. What makes this story different is that Crawford only recently discovered just how devious the school had been. As she uncovered the truth about her ordeal, she also had to face years of buried trauma and grief. To be assaulted is horrific enough, but then to be doubted, called a liar/slut/whatever, and told that the school's reputation trumps all, that is where the true tragedy lies.

If you have any triggers about these sort of issues, obviously this book is not for you. I will say that Crawford does an excellent job of detailing the account in a factual manner without making it seem too graphic. Crawford is also a gifted writer which makes the story an enthralling read.
