On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong

4.25 Stars Source: Library

Brief Synopsis: This story is told as a letter from a son to a mother who cannot read. It tells the story of his immigrant upbringing, of his mother's and grandmother's mental illnesses, and of his sexuality.

Thoughts: It is clear from the start that Vuong's background is poetry as this is a stellar work of literary fiction. Although categorized as a novel, the story feels heavily autobiographical, which makes the tales shared and Voung's voice just that much more powerful. It's both painful and beautiful, true to life and the human experience.
