The Lost Queen by Signe Pike

3.75 Stars Source: Audible/Amazon

Brief Synopsis: In 6th century Scotland, Languoreth is raised in the old ways and spends her days loving the natural world with her twin brother, Lailoken. But a new religion is taking over the land, one that will build new kingdoms and divide families. As the daughter of a chief, Languoreth must find a way to straddle both worlds in order to keep peace and protect her family.

Thoughts: This has been described as Outlander meet Mists of Avalon--I get the Mists of Avalon reference as Lailoken will go on to become Merlin, the Pendragon lineage begins in this story, and the magic of the wisdom keepers is strong. I originally started this story on Audible, which was so helpful in pronouncing names and I love a good Scottish accent. I ended up switching to the hard copy just so I could skim a little faster--at 527 pages I needed to speed a few sections up just a tad. This is well-written tale in the first of a planned trilogy and for the most part I was invested in the story. The only draw back for me was this: I personally have a hard time with plot lines that deal with Christianity in terms of the religion destroying pagan practices and especially making women healers out to witches and evil--it just makes me so angry that I end up not being able to enjoy the overall story. In this case, I wanted to see the story through to the end but I'm not sure I'll be up to the next books in the series.
