Brief Synopsis: Nella is tired of being the only black woman at her publishing house. When the company hires Hazel, Nella is excited to finally have a black colleague. It soon becomes apparent, however, that Hazel is not the ally that Nella was expecting as Hazel becomes the office darling and Nella finds herself in awkward situations. But when Nella begins to receive threatening notes, is there something even more sinister at work?
Thoughts: This book has been described as Get Out meets the Stepford Wives so you can probably imagine that things are going to get a little weird. I enjoyed the twist the story took as it was something totally unexpected and thought provoking. Reading reviews from black women, however, I can appreciate how many of them did not like the direction of the story or even the story's premise. This book has been hailed as one of this summer's hottest reads and it all over numerous summer book lists (mine included)--it's even Good Morning American's book club pick. However, most of these venues are very white and I would be curious to hear more from the black reading community about their thoughts on this tale.
