The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse

2.5 Stars Source: Audible

Brief Synopsis: Elin is a police detective out on leave for some personal issues. When her estranged brother invites her to celebrate his engagement at a very isolated hotel in the Swiss Alps, during a snow storm, what could possible go wrong? Yep, seems like the perfect place for some really weird murders to occur--hopefully Elin can figure it all out in time!

Thoughts: Oh boy. I'm trying to give this book the benefit of the doubt--if the two books I had read/listened to right before this one didn't have such well written, strong, interesting, female characters, then maybe, just maybe, I might have been able to tolerate this story. Alas, I'm really tired of female characters who spend all their time being insecure and whiny, especially if they're supposed to be in law enforcement. I'm not saying I'm opposed to female leads having character flaws or moments in time when they doubt themselves, I know those elements can be needed to drive a story. But when the women spends the entire book with that annoying inner monologue of "Am i just being ridiculous? Am I overreacting? Am I irritating everyone around me?" I just want to reach out and smack them. In short, this one was really not for me.
