The Scarecrow by Michael Connelly

3 Stars Source: Audible

Brief Synopsis: Reporter Jack McEvoy is back! When newspaper budget issues force an early "retirement" for Jack, he decides to take on one last big investigation. While he initially hopes it will just save his job, he soon discovers that he has uncovered a serial killer and he quickly realizes he has more to worry about than just finishing the story.

Thoughts: Yes, this is your typical Connelly style murder mystery but I did find it interesting to hear about Jack's life in the many years following The Poet. It was refreshing to know that a Pulitzer and a big book deal will only last so long; when 10+ years have passed with nothing to follow it up, Jack has just become a very expensive writer for the LA Times without much more to show for it. I appreciated that realism and the discussion about the difficulties print media faced during those years. The mystery and action was everything I expected--basically it was an easy listen but not something I'll remember a week from now (which many times is perfectly fine for me).
