We Ride Upon Sticks by Quan Barry

4 Stars Source: Amazon

Brief Synopsis: The 1989 Danvers High School field hockey team is tired of terrible losing streak. Before the start of their senior year, they decide to make a pact with...Emilio Estevez and promise to do whatever is needed to assure they win. As their luck starts to change, so too does their view of their lives and futures. Life as they know it is starting to change--is it because of witchcraft or just the end of adolescence?

Thoughts: This was a book club read and the group was split on their thoughts. I, however, really enjoyed this unique tale and found it to be quite funny and even touching. The narrator is the collective "we" of the team, which can be confusing at times but helped define the story as being told from the group's perspective. While this dances around the idea of witchcraft and making pacts with the devil, it never turns dark and actually maintains an almost sweet teen innocence of the entire ordeal. The humor in this story is dry and weird, but I loved the character of the hair-sprayed bangs (the CLAW) dictating orders, and the weird hickey ( The Splotch) adding commentary. If you're up to a totally out-of-the-box reading experience then pick this one up pronto!
